14/232 War Memorial
War Memorial, early 1920's. Granite obelisk with bronze sculpture and
plaques. Square plan. Five low steps; square plinth with moulded cap, carved
draped wreaths on north and south sides, lettered plaques on other sides;
tapered obelisk, the base surrounded by bronze relief sculptured figures
representing participants in war effort: e.g. soldiers, sailors, airman,
fisherman, farmer, miner, nurse, and mother with child. Plaque on east side
of plinth reads A TRIBUTE OF HONOUR/ TO THE MEN WHO/ MADE THE SUPREME
SACRIFICE/ TO THE MEN WHO CAME BACK/ AND TO THOSE WHO WORKED AT HOME/ TO WIN
SAFETY FOR THE EMPIRE/ 1914 - 1918. Base of rear bronze relief inscribed
"R F ROSLYN" (vide: War memorial, Manchester Road, Haslingden).
