SD 53 NE GOOSNARGH BROADITH LANE
5/38 Brook Farmhouse
Farmhouse, now house. Dated 1684 on lintel, but probably earlier,
remodelled at that date, altered at various dates subsequently. Sandstone
rubble mostly roughcast and rendered, slate roof with 2 brick chimneys.
Three-bay baffle-entry plan, with wide porch wing at junction of Ist and
2nd bays, shallow rear outshut to 1st and part of 2nd bay, modern extension
to rear of 3rd bay. Two storeys; full-height porch has doorway to right
(in line with ridge chimney) with chamfered surround and shaped lintel
lettered in relief T , a 4-pane sash in centre of 1st floor; to left,
one large I : I
4-pane sash on each floor, to right a similar but smaller window to 3rd bay
and 2 others above. Right gable wall has plinth; rear has altered
horizontal rectangular windows, a blocked doorway to 2nd bay, and a modern
extension to the 3rd bay. Interior: partition wall at junction of 2nd and
3rd bays incorporates one cruck truss, of small scantling, apex missing,
with large tie-beam and 2 service doorways below it (the front of these
recently removed); 2nd bay has large roughly-chamfered beam with scarf
joint c.2 metres from C18 stone fireplace; 1st bay has 2 similar beams, one
with similar joint; roof truss at junction of 2nd and 3rd bays has incised
lettering W (I?) N, and other illegible marks.
