Description

SD 54 SW GOOSNARGH INGLEWHITE

1/62 Lower Fairhurst Farmhouse

II

Farmhouse, part dated 1678 on lintel, but mostly C18. Sandstone rubble, the
earlier part random and the later coursed, both with quoins; slate roof on 2
levels. Earlier part at south end is single depth and single storey, consists
of housepart and service end (altered) of original house with baffle entry on
west side, the altered doorway with a shaped lintel lettered in the centre
ET.IT and at the right end "h; to the right (under later additions) and in the
1678 n"
east wall (partly covered by lean-to addition) are remains of stone mullion
windows with hoodmoulds. The interior of this part has a 1/4-round moulded
beam, and an inglenook fireplace with stone heck and similarly moulded
bressummer, containing an C18 stone fireplace with corbelled jambs.
Continuing on the same axis behind the inglenook is the C18 house, which is
double depth, 3 bays, 2 storeys and attic, and has a symmetrical east facade
with rusticated quoins, central moulded doorway, 2 windows at ground floor and
3 above, all with moulded architraves containing 4-pane sashes. Gable end
stacks. The rear (west) has in the centre a stairlight cross window with
small panes (some irregular), and 2 small windows on each floor, all (except
lower right, which has been altered) of 3 lights with chamfered flush
mullions, and the upper with small panes (irregular in the left). The
interior of this part contains a doglegged staircase with open string,
scrolled brackets, 2 turned balusters per tread, and a ramped handrail which
is otherwise of C17 character. Good example of alternate rebuilding.
