SK 81 SE OAKHAM ROAD (East side)

6/22 Riding school, stables and
outbuilding at Ashwell Hall.


Riding school, stables and outbuilding of c1879. Coursed squared ironstone
with limestone dressings, buff brick linings, and Collyweston slate and
glass roofs. Stone coped gables with finials. In Elizabethen style. Behind
the left side of the principal stable ranges (q.v.) is set a subsidiary
yard. Opposite the principal left side range a 1 storey stable building
with stable doors and windows. Behind this a riding school of about 2
storeys height. 5 small gables with windows on far side and 3 similar
on left side. Inside walls brick lined. Hipped roof supported on iron
frame and central section glazed. Iron ridge flashing. To the right of
this across an open entrance a long 1½ storey range projecting forwards
on the line of the continuation of the middle side of the principal stable
range. The carriage entrance goes between their gabled ends. Various
stable doors and windows and wooden fleche on roof. On rear of this range
furthest from the driveway a 1 storey outbuilding with open front.
