COLEORTON
ASHBY ROAD
Chapel of St John

(Formerly listed as Cemetery Chapel)

II

Small Chapel, 1856-7, granite rubble, randomly coursed, with ashlar dressings and plain tiled roof. Coped gables, cross finial at east end, bell cote at west. Two windows, lancets with cusped trefoiled heads, and polychrome voussoirs. West door has hood-mould with foliate capitals. Three-light east window. Interior walls ornamented with red sandstone band and polychrome voussoirs to windows.

The cornerstone for the chapel was laid on 21 October 1856, and the Leicester Journal reported the consecration of the chapel on 27 August 1857. It is thought that Sir George Howland Beaumont (1828-82) of Coleorton Hall and his steward Peter Heward were responsible for the design of the chapel
