House. Core probably of C16, extended or extensively altered in the early
C17, and partly refaced in brick in the C18. Now largely rough cast. Plain
tiled roof. 2 storeyed, the plan consists of 2 parallel gables running north
west south east, possibly of different construction dates: the entrance front
is in the gable end, and has a central doorway flanked by 4 light tall wood
mullioned and transomed windows on each floor. Embattled string course above
the first floor windows. Both the gables have steeply coped parapets.
Indications of cambered rail of timber framing above doorway. South west
elevation also has parallel steeply coped gables, each with paired 4 light
wood mullioned and transomed windows on each floor, and a string course
above. Beyond, a further bay is a late C18 addition, with enbattled parapet
concealing a single slope roof, and giving false front with sash window cut by
inner floor level. Rear elevation is of exposed brickwork, 4 light wood
mullioned and transomed window to lower right, and to stair, the latter
retaining its original glazing in leaded lights. Other windows here are
casements of 2 and 3 lights. Various blocked or partly blocked openings
also. Range of C19 outbuildings to south east with gabled frontispiece to
coach entry now integral with house. Inside, the house has received a number
of alterations and the 3 principal fireplaces appear to have been largely
rebuilt. However an early C17 staircase survives, with splat balusters. 2
rooms, one on each floor, have fine moulded ceiling beams and joists; rolled
and fluted mouldings which continue through the sharp chamfer stops. Upper
lime plaster floor dated 1605. Exposed timber framing inside reveals square
panelled construction with straight arched bracing. Roof construction
consists of 2 parallel ridges and 1 lateral ridge which runs south west north
east, and with wind bracing in part.
