Railway Station. Circa 1873. Red brick with ashlar dressings, and
hipped slate roofs with bracketed oversailing eaves and brick ridge
stacks. Aligned north-south. The West front faces the station yard.
Single-storey main block with lower single-storey wings set back
slightly. The main block is in a rhythm of 3:3:3 bays with projecting
centre. All windows are sashes with raised and moulded surrounds,
raised keys, scrolled sides and bracketed sills. The central windows
of the 2 outer portions are larger: Central 2-leaf panelled door with
overlight and similar surround to the windows. The left-hand wing has
a central doorway and a window to the right whereas the right-hand wing
has 3 windows, the centre one larger. East front: 5-bay open centre
portion with cast iron columns and openwork brackets. 3 windows to
each side; the right-hand wing has a central door and 2 flanking
windows; the left hand wing has a door to the left and a window to the
right. Shackerstone railway station was designed and built by the
Midland Railway Co. and served the line between Hinckley/Nuneaton and
Ashby/Coalville. Passenger services began 1st September, 1873.
