Country House. 1838 but on site of earlier house of 1727, possibly
incorporating some of its features. Stucco over brick, with Welsh slate
roofs. Jacobean style. Entrance front is 2 storeyed and 5 bays, the
central bay projecting. From it springs a squared entrance porch with
recessed doorway flanked by single light windows. 5 light mullioned and
transomed window above. Frieze, and decorated Dutch gable. Outer bays have
4 light mullioned and transomed windows. All opening have lugged
architraves. Double string course, quoins on all angles, modillion eaves
cornice. Hipped Welsh slate roof. Axial stacks with polygonal shafts.
South elevation is of 2 bays, then a wing recessed behind a courtyard. North
elevation of 7 bays with central Dutch gable, containing round arched doorway
now window with grotesque keystone. Other windows are 4 lights with mullions
and transoms and lugged architraves. 2 coped gabled dormers above. Single
storey bay to left linked to main block by large moulded volute. Plain
marble fireplaces inside, meagre staircase reputably a survival from the
earlier house. Heavy roof trusses also possibly retained from earlier
building.
