Description

KILBY
SP69 NW MAIN STREET (North Side)

2/39 Barn Behind Church

GV II

Field barn, possibly remains of a former manor house, probably C16. Granite
and limestone rubble with dressed quoins and early narrow brickwork in gable
apex. Some brick repair work in elevation around window openings. Welsh
slate roof with steep pitch. Now forms a single range of 2 bays, one and a
half storeys, but the elevational features may not relate to its original
form. They comprise a central door and flanking windows, with a small window
in the gable and an upper gable light also. Inside in a corner against the
rear wall is an apparently C16 fireplace with a chamfered shallow archway.
Deeply moulded cross beam supporting upper storey which is not continuous
across the whole of the building. It seems likely that this building
represents a composite structure re-assembled from elements of the manor house.
