7/53 No 9 (The Corner House)
and garden wall attached to
House. Dated WW 1786 on rainwater head, altered early-mid C19. Pale red brick,
colourwashed render plinth, early-mid C19 wooden eaves cornice on paired brackets,
Swithland slate roof, flanking brick chimneys. 3 storeys, 3 bays. Raised first
floor band with recessed central course. Early-mid C19 sashes in flush frames,
3-pane flanking 2-pane, all with good cambered heads. Central 4-panelled door
with rectangular fanlight and fine wooden doorcase. Doorcase has architrave
frame, fluted frieze with flower petal motifs on oval paterae, and small pedi-
ment. At right end of house is a later C19 2-storey extension with one bay of
sashes and a small irregular projection in end wall. Attached to right of this
bay is a brick garden wall with granite plinth and stone coping. Altered kitchen
wing to rear. Interior: very good central staircase of late C18 date with 3
delicate turned balusters per tread, newel columns, cut scroll tread ends and
moulded handrail. Ground floor room to right has early-mid C19 fireplace surround
with moulded pilaster jambs, frieze and paterae, and flanking arched cupboards
with fluted pilasters and dentil cornices.
