COSBY
CROFT ROAD
(south west side)
Barn 50 M east of Cosby House
(formerly listed as part of Cosby House)

G.V.
II

Barn. Late C16, altered 1766 and late C18, C19 and C20. Timber
close studding and box framing, with rubble and brick plinth,
brick nogging and slate roof. 5 bays. The frame has a mid rail
and diagonal braces. In most of the lower panels, and in the
east gable, the studding has been replaced by brick. The north
side has a slightly off-centre pair of plank barn doors, flanked
by small brick buttresses, and beyond, in the lower panels, cross
breathers. The south side has a cut down pair of similar doors
with a late C20 weatherboarded panel above them, and to their
left, a plank door. Above, to the left, a fragment of wattle and
daub nogging. The east gable has the date 1766 in burnt headers
and above it, 3 breathers. Interior has jowled posts with
mortices suggesting a double strutted span beam at mid rail
level. Low pitched principal rafter roof with the main timbers
doubled and C19 queen post trusses inserted. Single purlins and
C20 ridge piece.
