Ceres in Belvoir
15.8.79 Garden (one of the
Sculpture reputed to be of Ceres (Goddess of Corn). Circa 1680. By Caius
Gabriel Cibber. Stone. Square pedestal with recessed panels each carved
with high relief heraldic and other emblems, including Earl's coronet
(Earls of Rutland became Dukes 1703). Under cornice a dentil course and
egg and dart frieze. Clothed masculine-looking figure in attitude of a man
striding forward. At his feet a large sheaf of corn.
