Description

SK70 SE EAST NORTON CHURCH LANE (East Side)

2/9 The Cottage

GV II

House, formerly 2 cottages. Largely late C17. Coursed ironstone rubble with
Welsh slate roof. 2 storeyed. Front is in 3 sections, with a projecting bay
to left, and lean-to brick porch in its angle, 1 renewed 2-light casement
window on each floor in central bay, the lower with surviving hoodmould. Some
quoins mark the division with taller right-hand bay which has blocked doorway
now window, with hoodmould and keystone and a new casement window above, with
original hoodmould. Ovolo moulded architraves survive round renewed casement
windows in gable wall, and a date stone in the apex records probably the re-roofing
of the house in c1848. Rear elevation has 3 windows to left of doorway, only
the middle one retaining its original ovolo moulded architrave and mullion.
Door has rough timber lintel and 2-light ovolo moulded mullioned window in
the right-hand bay. Upper windows are all ovolo moulded mullioned lights with
the exception of the left-hand window which has been renewed. Gable and axial
stacks.
