3/20 Old Hall Cottage

Cottage, formerly three dwellings, forming a row at right angles to the
street. The earliest is C17, the others probably later additions of the C18
to Cl9. The earliest unit is timber framed, partially rendered over but
probably with brick panel infill, and thatched roof. Other units also
rendered probably over brick with low pitched Welsh slate roofs. Original
block is of post and truss construction with two unit plan, six panels long
and three high, though some of the members are now rendered over. No sill
beam is visible above the granite plinth. Some straight arch bracing at
angles and centrally. Lean-to porch addition at ground floor level, but a
2-light casement window to each floor beyond it. Curved arch braces in the
gable, and curved principals, which cross at the apex. Queen struts below the
collar, a King strut above it. Central doorway to rear is flanked by 3-light
casement windows. Axial stack. The doorway in the front elevation is in a
large modern gabled porch at junction of this unit and the lower later block
beyond. Both the later parts are of single unit plan with gable end stacks
though one of these has been removed, and each has a single 3-light casement
window on each floor.
