Country House. now 2 dwellings.It is in two distinct parts: The earliest is
Tudor, but itself probably incorporates an earlier core and the latter part is
of c1790, the two are linked by a Victorian Gothick wing of c1870 when the old
hall was restored. The old hall is brick with plain tiled roof with cresting
which dates from the Victorian restoration. It presents a range of five
gables, the outer two project as wings and all are 2½ stories high. The
right hand gable appears detached from the main range as if it had at some
time been reduced in size. It has three light mullioned windows with small
panes and stone architraves and hood moulds which, in common with all other
windows in the main facade, are Victorian, though possibly copies of what they
replaced. In the gable apexes a blind older window with cambered brick head
and an oculus beneath it. The three central gables are similarly detailed
with older window heads visible in the attics and stone mullioned windows
below. Some of these contain C18 to C19 armorial glass medallions in the
leaded glazing. Two windows at first floor level beneath outer gables.
Existing doorway to left of central gable: A round headed archway with stone
architrave and hood moulds in Victorian Gothick style. A similar doorway,
blocked and now a window in the Gothick style is in the right hand gable. To
the left another gable was added c1870. It has a large ground floor window
with mullions and transoms and armorial glass with stone hood mould and brick
relieving arch. The upper window is pierced through an ashlar architrave.
Polychrome decoration in the brickwork. In the rear wall of the righthand
gabled wing, a queen post and strut truss is visible and set back from this
there is an additional rear wing as a continuation of the second gable. This
also contains traces of timber work. On this side elevation another wing is at
right angles to these, it is also of old brickwork with dark headers so
possibly is also part of the original house. It contains three light wood
mullioned windows. Axial stacks to old hall. Victorian Gothick bay with
triple lancets pierced in ashlar architrave links the old hall with the
Georgian block. This range, which faces south east, is a massive three
storeys and five bays: A central canted portico with stone Ionic columns and
16 - light sash windows to ground floor, 12 lights above, all with flat arched
gauged brick heads. A further bay to the right is a Victorian addition, with a
full height canted bay window with full height sashes. Moulded eaves
cornice. Slate roof recessed behind parapet. Axial stacks. Inside, the old
hall contains substantial remnants of an even earlier timber framed building
including one cruck blade raised on a stone plinth, and various posts and
braces of a box framed building, perhaps C15. There is also a chamfered stone
fireplace bressumer which bears no relation to the existing plan. It is
panelled throughout with C18 woodwork. Some attractive Victorian features
including an internal window which depicts the Aesops fables in the stained
glass. The new hall has a series of fine plastered door cases and cornices in
the Adam style and a cantilevered stair top lit by a lantern.
