Architect, H E Kendall. Nine bay east range of 1830. Seven bay south range of 1841-6. On site of the house of the Carre family. L-plan. Range of early C19 almshouses in ashlar. Good 'Gothick" design of two storeys, five projecting porches with four-centred entrance arches and corner buttresses. Three windows to each section with two-light mullion windows to sides and labels to centre windows. Centre of south range has gable-ended chapel with crocketed pinnacles and traceried 'Perpendicular' pinnacles and traceried 'Perpendicular' window, over door in rectangular frame. Slate roofs and embattled parapet. Garden in front with pump and sundial and a paved walk beside street. Stone wall to right. Old gas lamp standard. Railings to wall have gone.
