Spinney Farm

II

Drainage tower mill. c.1800, converted to steam power late C19.
Red brick, tarred, facetted slate roof, with lead dressings.
Circular plan. Squat tower reduced to half its former height,
with single planked door. To the right a large timber scoopwheel
with iron bands, and each spoke numbered, is set in a narrow
splayed channel and mounted on a large grit stone block. On the
left an iron flywheel for driving by a traction engine. Not
inspected internally. This is the only remaining pumping
windmill on Holland Fen and was in use, driven by a tractor,
until about 1960. Source: P. Dolman.
