6/165 Seats, balustrades
and terraces to east
of Stoke Rochford
Seats, balustrades and terraces. 1841-5. By William Burn for
Sir Christopher Turnor. Ashlar. To the east of the house are
upper and lower terraces with parterre to the south. At the
south end of the main terrace is a gargantuan stone seat with
panelled back, scrolled arm rests and large orb finials. 2 pairs
of stone steps link the terraces and to the lower side are
panelled parapets linked by open balustrades, all with square
panelled piers and continuously moulded copings. At the south
end of the lower terrace is a lesser seat supported on moulded
corbels. The terraces overlook the picturesquely wooded valley of
the Witham and retain their original landscape setting.
