FOTHERBY CHURCH LANE
TF 39 SW
4/21 Church of
St. Mary
9.3.67
II

Parish church. C13, 1863 rebuilding by James Fowler of Louth.
Squared chalk and limestone, with sandstone dressings, slate
roofs with decorative ridge tiles. Western tower, nave, chancel,
south porch. Tower of 3 stages with clasping buttresses, stone
octagonal spire with 4 lucarnes. Moulded eaves with fleurons.
In the ground floor of the west side is a tall lancet. There are
4 similar smaller windows in the middle stage to each side and in
the belfry are paired lights with shafts and quatrefoils. In
the north wall are 2 paired lancets with cinquefoils over. There
is a similar 3 light window in the east wall of the chancel. The
chancel south wall has 2 lancets with cusped heads and in the
nave are 3 windows matching those to the north. The steeply
pitched gabled porch has a richly moulded outer door with
floriate stops and an arched niche above. There are wooden side
benches, trilobe side lights and a second moulded doorway within.
Interior. The tower arch incorporates some early C13 masonry
including keeled responds and double chamfered arch, however the
capitals are entirely C19. The chancel arch is single chamfered
of polychromatic brick on C19 paired annular shafts, with moulded
hood and floriated stops. Nave and chancel walls of red facing
brick with flush ashlar bands and all rear arches are of
polychromatic brick, and the cornice is dentillated. All
fittings are C19 apart from C15 plain octagonal font. Fragments
of medieval masonry from Fotherby Church were removed at the time
of the restoration to Brackenborough Hall where they were reused
in the folly there.
