SK 99 SE SNITTERBY MOOR ROAD

Church of
3/42 St. Nicholas
1.11.66
II

Parish church. 1866 by James Fowler. Coursed and rock faced
limestone rubble, stone slate roofs with decorative ridge tiles,
stone coped gables with crosses fleury. Western tower, nave,
apsidal chancel, south porch, vestry. Although largely rebuilt
in C19 the lower 2 stages of the tower are in coursed limestone
rubble and appear to be in medieval masonry. The 3 stage tower
with plinth and moulded string course rises to battlemented
parapet with angle pinnacles. On the south side is a stair
turret. The west wall contains a 2 light window. The belfry
stage has double lights to each face. The north wall of the nave
has 2 paired lights. The chancel apse has 3 lancets at the east
end and a 4th lancet in the south side. The south wall of the
nave is as the north side, but the windows are slightly larger.
The gabled south porch has a moulded doorway in the Early English
style. Interior; the inside walls are in red brick with ashlar
and black brick horizontal bands. The chancel and other arches
have vary-coloured brick voussoirs. The brick and stone
cancellae screen wall has a built in ashlar and marble lectern.
All the fittings are contemporary.
