6/72 Cemetery Chapels


Church of England and Non-Conformist Cemetery Chapels, now
Oecumenical cemetery chapel and store-room. 1854. Stock brick
with limestone ashlar dressings. Ornamental slate roof with
stone coped gables, decorative ridge tiles and cross finials. 2
single storey chapels divided by tall pointed archway crowned
with tower with 4 stage diagonal buttresses with upper gablets
running into ornate corner pinnacles. Octagonal spire above with
tall trefoil headed openings with ornate gablets, on each side;
finial. Underside of tower with rib vault with ornate corbels
and bosses. Plinth and sill bands run round both chapels. West
side of north chapel with single pointed window with single
cusped ogee headed lights flanking pointed, cusped light;
flowing tracery, hood mould and head label stops. North side
with central projecting rectangular bay. Single pointed windows
flank this bay, each with 2 pointed, cusped lights, hood mould
and head label stops. Return walls of projecting bay each with
small trefoil headed lights with hood moulds and head label
stops. Projecting bay with pointed plank doorway with hood
moulds. East end with a pointed window, 3 cusped, ogee headed
lights, flowing tracery, hood mould and head label stops. South
side has pointed doorway set underneath tower arch with double
plank doors and hood mould. South chapel is identical to the
north chapel, with the doorway in the north side, underneath the
tower arch, and the projecting rectangular bay to the south, with
the doorway blocked. Interior of both chapels with lierne rib
vaults with ornate bosses and angel corbels.
