The building is disposed around a central paved garden behind the frontage buildings
of Threadneedle Street and Cornhill. Entrance doorway set in No 32 Threadneedle
Street. Of late C17 character, probably of stone, now rendered. Arched entrance
with pair of Corinthian columns and piers supporting broken segmental pediment
with coat of arms in centre. Still rebuilt after war damage by Sir Albert Richardson,
incorporates C14 material of the original hall in walls. Main staircase to west
of hall also by Richardson. West range, late C17 elevation, 2 storeys, brick;
plain facade with recessed sash windows, interior totally refitted after war damage.
South and east ranges enclosing garden, 1878-9 by l'Anson. Domestic Gothic style
in Portland stone. 2 storeys plus dormers in slated roof.
Crypt to east of hall Late C14. 2 bays (another to north now destroyed) with
ribbed vault and carved corbels. Restored doorway at south end. Kitchen to south
of crypt. Early C15 with alterations of late C17, C19, and modern. Large, square
compartment with buildings now added above it. Walling (where exposed) of rubble
patched with brick. 3 large, 4 centred archways on north side. Arched doorway
in east wall and blocked windows to south and west. Moulded corbels formerly supporting
roof timbers. 2 large fireplaces, late C17. Timber strutting between flues.
Segmentally arched C17 windows to north. Scheduled AM.
