Early-mid C19, Large villa of 3 storeys, 3 windows. Moderately low pitched,
hipped slate roof with deep eaves soffit. Yellow stock brick with stuccoed
front. Centre and angles slightly set back. Centre windows on 1st and and floor
3-light. 2nd floor casements, 1st floor sash windows, all in plain reveals.
At ground floor centre a canted bay with pilasters, entablature and blocking
course; and 3 round arched sash windows. Left andright windows full-length casements
with transom, 3-light.
Left entrance return 4-bay, the left bay canted, full height. Sash windows on
1st and 2nd floors with cill bands. Long casements with transoms on ground floor
in 2 left bays. Lower 3rd bay, defined by stuccoed quoins, has sash windows
and 2nd floor cill band. All windows have stucco lined reveals. Entrance on
ground floor with paired pilasters, entablature and blocking course. Modern
double door with patterned radial fanlight, probably imported. Lower right bay
blank with chimney. Inside, drawing-room has 2 original marble fireplaces and
screen of fluted, square Corinthian columns, now blocked.
This house is said to have been the residence of John Stuart Mill in the 1860's
during his activity for the Women's Emancipation Movement; and also, for an unspecified
time, of Lord Aberdeen, the Prime Minister.
