House. Late C18 with earlier origins; C19 and early C20 alterations and addi-
tions. Pebbledash render to entrance elevation; rear of plum-coloured brick in
Flemish bond; Welsh slate roofs; rendered and brick stacks. Original section of
2 storeys with basement and attic, 5 bays; on right, early C20 addition, of 2
storeys and basement, 2 bays; on left, added wing of 2 and 3 storeys. Original
section: plinth; giant pilasters at ends, broken by plat band and rising into
entablature with frieze and dentilled cornice; central 3-bay break below
corniced pediment with oculus in tympanum and flanked by balustraded parapet.
Central pedimented Tuscan porch, up 2 steps, protects door of 6 raised and
fielded panels below fanlight with delicate decorative glazing bars, in tall
round-arched surround. Unhorned 12-pane sashes in reveals, shorter on 1st
floor. Hipped roof with attic dormers and end stacks. Early C20 addition on
right has ashlar bay window with Ionic columns, cornice, and blocking course.
12-pane sashes, triple over bay window. C20 addition on left has canted ashlar
porch, the 1st floor above it projecting slightly and balustraded. Rear:
windows mostly have flat yellow-brick arches. Original section: segmental-
headed basement windows; tall 15-pane sashes to ground floor, bays 2 and 3
covered by raised wooden bay on timber posts having 15-pane sash flanked by
8-pane sashes, egg and dart cornice, and parapet with turned balusters; 12-pane
sashes to 1st floor. Ashlar eaves band and cornice. Later stone (or cement)
parapet. 3 attic dormers. Slightly recessed, hipped roofed, side wings, of 2
bays on right, 4 bays on left. Interior: original features include panelled
window shutters; some moulded cornices; and closed-string dog-leg stair with
stick balusters, columnar newels, and ramped moulded handrail. Unusual fire-
place to right of entrance has brown Delf-tile surround, and moulded triangular-
headed wooden architrave with pedimented mantel and affixed floral and leafy
motifs. C19 panelled doors, panelling, cornices, and main open-well stone stair
which has decorative scroll and foliage work to balusters. Early C20 addition
on right has panelled walls, door, decorative fireplace, and integral buffet
with fluted columns to over-cupboards; on 1st floor an Adam style fireplace with
elaborate 3-mirrored over-mantel. A lodge is believed to have been built here
c1723 for the deputy ranger.
