1811. Charles Beazley architect. Three ranges of 2-storey buildings round
an open court with cast iron screen to 4th side. All of brown brick with
stucco central feature and south side elevations. Main central building
has 11:1:11 double hung sashes in reveals with sills and flat arches. Arched
doorways alternating with windows have 6 panel doors, bracketed hoods and
fanlights. Central projecting feature: channeled ground floor with semi-circular
porch with 2 Ionic columns, first floor, panels under flat roof with acroteria
at corners, recessed centre containing lunette under a hatchment and 2 staffs
of Mercury; pediment above with clock in tympanum. Side buildings, joined
to central range by curved walls, have 8 windows. South end elevations with
projecting porticos, each with 2 Ionic columns in antis set between arched
bays; cast iron railings and gates, 6 steps up. On the gable ends above these
porticos, rusticated stucco chimney stacks flanked by panels and carved stone
volutes with lion heads and swags; cornice pediments brocken by chimney stacks.
Two sections of cast iron railings to street frontage, arrow-headed with vases
on the main stanchions.
