The description shall be amended to read:-
Chemist's shop with accommodation over (now separate). Dated
1902, shop re-ordered c1924. Brownish brick with ashlar
dressings; tiled roof having crested ridge tiles. Three storeys,
one bay. C1924 shop front set within original surround. Recessed
central door with overlight and tessellated pavement in front,
flanked by bow-corned windows which have black marble plinths,
slender columns with bulbous bases and capitals, and transoms.
Continuous overlight. The door and overlights have glazing bars
forming lozenges. The surround has red marble pilasters on
plinths supporting short paired columns with plain capitals;
console brackets flank fascia and support cornice. Above is 2-
storey, canted bay window having transomed 4-light windows with
wooden casements and small-pane upper lights, cornices, date
panel between windows and coat of arms breaking parapet above.
First floor band, eaves band and string below coped parapet.
Chimney on right. Interior: good quality shop fittings survive
from the original period and from the c1924 re-ordering when the
rear parlour was brought into the shop space and the shop side-
wall units were extended rearwards; the counter display cupboard
originally set on right side is now on left side. Fittings
include the 2 original counter cupboards, the longer (front)
range having raked counter display unit and an upper cupboard on
left side with decorative frieze and pediment; third, similar,
range along rear wall. Side wall lined with cupboards and
shelves, the unit on left side with labelled glass-handled
drawers, mirrors, and clock in elaborate decorative surround. The
units are of mahogany and have decorative spandrels, fluted
pilasters, console brackets, broken pediments, and urn finials.
Between front and rear sections of shop is 3-bay screen with
tapering fluted square columns supporting central segmental arch
and flanking round arches; open frieze of burned balusters. Shop
has moulded cornice and boarded ceiling. The building is of
special interest because of the quality and completeness of the
shop fittings and shop front.
