Parish church. Nave, aisles, north-west tower, north porch, chancel. Flint
rubble, the upper parts of battlemented tower refaced in brick, and west ends
of nave and south aisle in C19 red brick and stock brick. North aisle and
east end stuccoed. North porch and south aisle of handsome flush flint and
stone chequering. Tiled roof. Some C12 work in west wall, C13 chancel, C14
south aisle. Early C16 north aisle and chapel, and tower. Gallery in north
aisle. Many handsome monuments in particular:
a. 4-post tomb to Countess of Derby 1636;
b. Mary, Lady Newdigate 1692 by Grinling Gibbons;
c. 3 urns, inset in south chancel wall, to Newdigate family by
J Bacon Jr;
and other wall monuments, one by Gibbons, others by Rysbrack and J Bacon Junr.
Several C15 and C16 brasses. Portrait bust to William Ashby 1760 by Sir Robert
Taylor. Elaborate Flemish carved wood reredos and communion rail.
