Late 1930s by Adams, Holden and Pearson with L H Bucknell.
Concrete with red brick facades. Frontage building is a wide crescent with shops
below in a ground floor which projects in the inner curve. Continuous bands of
windows on first floor. The station is entered through a central opening with screen
of two columns and steel mesh overhead doors. Above this the two sides of the curve
are separated and emphasised by blank panels with symbolic sculpture above of two
halves of a broken, sprung bogey.
The inner hall is spacious and carried on flattened concrete arches, which continue
to form a vista down to the platforms. More shops are inside, in addition to the
booking office, and there is sloped clerestory lighting above them.
