Raikes Mausoleum in
St Mary's Churchyard
TQ 3990 11/C
Circa 1797. Neo-classical mausoleum somewhat in the Soane manner. Square.
Of Portland stone. Primitive segmental pediment on each elevation; blank walls
except for south side where there is a sealed entrance. Crisply carved oval
sarcophagus on top with square feet, fluted sides and ring handles. Panels
with epitaphs. One reads "Sacred to the memory of Martha Pelly the wife of Wm
Raikes Esq of this parish, in whom the conjugal, parental and all the relative
virtues were heightened by the advantages of a superior understanding". Mr Raikes
was a director of the Bank of England.
