Description

ARTILLERY LANE E1
1.
4431 No 41

II

2.
House and shop. Circa 1800 remodelling of an apparently mid C18
house, shop front inserted mid C19. Yellow stock brick with red
rubbed heads to first floor, roof not visible. Three storeys and
attic, five bays, the centre and right hand ones being blind
recessed panels on main front. Sashes with glazing bars. Central
doorway with arched head and panelled reveals, six panel door with
raised and fielded panels, radiating fanlight. Shop front to
right of doorway on ground floor, fascia with brackets. Single
bay corner elevation, with four further bays (two blind) fronting
Gun Street. The interior has a most unusual disposition of rooms
round a central air-well, which probably dates from circa 1800 as
does the staircase with plain turned balusters. The rest of the
interior has plain mid C18 panelling, particularly good in the
ground floor 'shop' rooms. Other original and c1800 features
include firesurrounds, iron grates, dadoes, cornices, doors,
cupboards and floorboards. It is a remarkably complete survival
of the interior of this type of house.
