GV II

Barracks, now museum and offices. 1845. Squared and coursed limestone with
ashlar dressings; slate roof; stone stacks. Castellated Gothic Revival style
with Domestic Tudor details. 3 storeys; 19-window range. Corbelled crenellated
parapet over recessed central bay, with ogee-arched window over Tudor-arched
3-light windows above pointed-arched doorway, which is flanked by octagonal
turrets with lancets and gargoyles to string course beneath crenellated parapet.
7-bay ranges, with crenellated parapets and Tudor-arched 2-light transomed
windows set in recessed bays, are terminated by slightly-projecting square
towers, each with corbelled crenellated parapet, similar fenestration and
corbelled square bay window. Other elevations in similar style. Interior:
remodelled in mid C20, but retains some segmental brick vaulting. Built to
accommodate nearly 1,000 soldiers, after 1841 fire had destroyed Grand Storehouse
on site.
