Description

1. LONDON ROAD
4430
(West Side)
WALLINGTON
No 258
TQ 2865 NE 9/94
II
2.
C19 mill building which served as a flock or cotton mill; this was at one time
known as Kilburn's cotton mill, attached to Kilburn's calico printing works,
the latter using the area of The Grange as a bleaching ground. No 258 did not
seem to have a wheel but obtained water from a stream which ran from The Grange
via the neighbouring watercress beds as far as the Wandle. No 258 is a 2-storey
building with 9 window bays to North and South sides. Hipped slate roof with
red tile ridges. Wood overhanging eaves. Painted weatherboarded walls. In
North side, 8 window bays and loft door at West end; C19 fixed windows with small
panes above [4 panes wide and 2 deep]; lower windows 2 panes wide and 2 deep.
In east gable end, a loft door, and, on ground floor, a 4-flush-panelled door
with rectangular fanlight. Modern accretions to ground floor on south side but
original wall remains.
See Dr M Wilks, "A Checklist of Wandle Watermills".
