Terraced town house. 1906-07 by Balfour and Turner. Portland stone
front, slate roof. Distinctive Balfour and Turner composition
characterised by trabeated generously windowed theme freely evoking
late C.17 Belgian-Dutch classicism (Brussels Grande Place e.g.) 4
storeys and basement. 4 windows wide. Entrance to right deeply
recessed between projecting piers with outward curving
naturalistically carved caps. Ground floor canted stone bay window
with small pane glazing bar sash lights in enriched architraves. 1st
floor full length nearly flush glazing bar sashes only separated by
pilasters on pedestals supporting entablature with fine
naturalistically carved frieze, 2nd floor has segmental arched
casements separated by smaller pilasters with caps at impost level and
the top floor glazing bar sashes rise from cornice-sill course in
shallow panels divided by pilasters. Moulded main cornice and
pediment over centre two bays, set against balustraded parapet. 1st
floor balcony with graceful ironwork trellis balustrade. Cast and
wrought iron area railings of individual design. The interior was
designed by White Allom and Co. with central reception hall and main
staircase top lit with Tijou style balustrade; 1927 Deco refurbishment
of Morning Room in veneered wood by G. Trollope & Sons.
