Description

TQ 2881 NW CITY OF WESTMINSTER WEYMOUTH STREET, Wl
45/45 (South side)
No 31
G.V. II
Terraced town house incorporating mews entrance. 1912-13 by Belcher and Joass
and in this case essentially a Joass design. Portland ashlar facing; slate
roof. Neo Grec details, relatively unusual for a domestic elevation. 3 storeys
and dormered mansard with basement. 3 windows wide. Central projecting porch
with slender columns of the Tower of the Winds order. Full height slightly
canted, bays, to left and above mews entrance to right and shallow recessed
square headed windows to centre, that on 1st floor with open pediment on
brackets; all casemented with glazing bars, those in canted bays with thin
ashlar dividers and transoms, the upper storey windows with keyblocks to heads.
Deep 1st floor plat band with Greek fret ornament; the canted bays are finished
off with honeycombed parapets and the centre rises sheer to parapet coping.
Part of the Portland (Howard de Walden) Estate's early C20 attempt to restore
the residential character of an area deemed too professional.
