Description

TQ 2881 SE CITY OF WESTMINSTER WIMPOLE STREET W1
56/22 (west side)
No 85
- II
Terrace house. 1913 by F M Elgood. Portland stone ashlar faced, slate roof. Four
storeys, basement and set back steep mansard. Austerely detailed elevation combining
Arts and Crafts with mid C18 French touches. Ground floor has recessed doorway with
shallow bolection architrave balanced to left by recessed window. Between them and
with wall plane advanced is a flush framed glazing bar sash window. Above rises a
shallow canted bay through first, second and third floors with flush framed glazing bar
sash lights in shallow bolection architraves. Raised panels over first and second
floor windows give cambered arch effect and the window architraves suggest vertical
"ribs" on the bay. The bay dies into the boldly projecting cornice borne each end of
festooned console-corbels. Console bracketed first floor balcony divided in 2 parts by
the bay window.
