Pair of large town houses with link block. 1892-94 by Balfour and
Turner. Red brick and Portland stone dressings, slate roofs. Free
Style with Flemish and early Renaissance details. 4 storeys,
basements and gabled attics. Each front 6 windows wide grouped in
pairs. Central 2 storey stone loggia porches with rather Byzantine
Ionic capitals to the columns which are coupled to centre on both
floors, balustraded parapets. Recessed glazing bar sashes under flat
arches, with shallow stone architraves up to 2nd floor, plain with
gauged arches on 3rd floor and in shaped gables of attic. Stone
string cornices and enriched cornice over 2nd floor. The 4-window
link has a glazed-in columned loggia on 1st floor picking up on theme
of the loggia-porches. The Flemish gabled returns to Aldford Street
and Mount Street have stone arcades on ground floor with enriched
console brackets carrying 2 storey rectangular stone bays with
pilastered triplets of windows to each floor, finished off to centre
on 3rd floor with blind sided canted stone bay similarly detailed and
crowned by a leaded tent roof and applied finial. Wrought iron area
railings. Part of Balfour and Turner's island block development with
Rex Place, Mount Street and Aldford Street in the context of their
Grosvenor Estate improvements.
