Terraced town house. c.1676-77 with early C.19 and later alterations,
part of Barbon's development of the York House estate. Stucco faced
brick, concealed roof. 3 storeys and rebuilt attic storey. 6 windows
wide. Rusticated ground floor with doorway in 2nd bay from left, panelled
door and fanlight in enriched carved wood architrave. Recessed glazing
bar sashes in exposed box frames. Plat bands over ground and 1st floors.
Parapet with coping. Cast iron area railings with urn finials. Interior
considerably altered early C.19 and later but retains good staircase off
bolection panelled inner hall: substantial oak construction, dog legged
with moulded closed strings, twisted balusters moulded handrail and solid
square newels with turned pendants; landings panelled with panelled
pilaster archivolt arched doorcases, impost strings and moulded cornices,
etc. L.C.C. plaque records residence of Samuel Pepys from 1679 to 1688,
he lived there with William Hewer when the house was partly in use as the
Admiralty Office. Graded I for Pepys association.
