One of a pair of large town houses. c.1828 by John Nash with
(Sir) James Pennethorne. Stucco, slate roof. Part of the southern
termination of Nash's Via Triumphalis raised on terrace with south front to
the Mall. 3 tall storeys, basement and dormered mansard. 5 windows wide
and with 6-window south front with central full height bow. Portico-porch
to right with 2 pairs of Ionic columns and balustraded parapet. Recessed
glazing bar sashes, those on ground and 2nd floors with cornices on
consoles, those on 1st floor with pediments on consoles. Pseudo parapet
with blind balustrading below window sills on 1st floor, 2nd floor sill
band; moulded cornice and balustraded parapet. The return front has
similar fenestration, including bow, but with the 1st floor parapet fully
developed as a balustraded balcony on shallow console brackets. Cast iron
spear head area railings. No. 2 was Lord Kitchener's London residence as
Secretary of State for War from 1914 to his death in 1916 (LCC plaque).
