Headquarters offices. 1901 by William Woodward for the International
Sleeping Car and European Express Co. (Wagons Lit). Portland stone with
polished red granite ground floor, slate roof. Designed, appropriately for
this French company, in late Franco-Flemish Gothic. Corner block of 4
storeys and attics. 5 windows wide with narrower 3 window return east
elevation. Ground floor has central doorway flanked by display windows
with octagonal shafted jambs and quadrant cornered lintels. Through storey
ornate oriels to upper floors with leaded lights. Finialed pinnacles to
parapet. Steep roof with gabled dormers. Angle tourelle with pepper-box
roof to left forms part of symmetrical tourelle composition of east
elevation with granite faced shop returned and 3 light mullioned transomed
windows to 1st and 2nd floor framed by pointed arch surmounted by 3 attic
windows in ornate gable end, the central window framed by pinnacles.
