Terraced town house. c.1731 with c.1792 alterations. Brown brick with
red brick window dressings, channelled stucco ground floor, slate roof.
4 storeys (top floor c.1792 heightening), C.19 dormered mansard, and
basement. 4 windows wide. Square 3 room plan with front compartment
staircase to 1st floor and secondary stairs. Elliptical arched doorway
in 2nd bay from right, in plain stucco surround, recessed panelled door
and fanlight. Recessed plate glass sashes under flat gauged red brick
arches. Cornice-band finishing off ground floor stuccowork; parapet with
coping. 1st floor geometrical pattern cast iron balconettes. Cast iron
area railings with urn finials. Interior largely intact with fielded
panelling and moulded cornices; front compartment staircase has narrow
oblong well, cut and carved string with the turned balusters finishing in
circular cluster on the curtail, Doric column newels also spacing landing
balusters, panelled dado to stairwell wall and cove to ceiling; the rear
stairs have narrow open well, 2 turned balusters per tread; the doors to
main 1st floor rooms slightly bowed, in fret-carved architraves, etc.
Part of the Craven family's C.18 development of their Brewhouse estate,
laid out by Flitcroft.
