Nos. 67 and 68.
Pair of terrace houses. 1731-32 by John Meard. Stock brick, the ground floor of No.
67 stuccoed, tiled roofs. 4 storeys and basements. Each front 3 windows wide.
Doorways to left and right respectively with panelled doors and rectangular fanlights,
recessed in painted stone doorcases of Roman Doric pilasters, the entablatures with
triglyphs and rosettes in friezes and projecting cornices. Slightly recessed partly
exposed frame later Georgian glazing bar sashes under segmental red brick arches and
with red brick dressings. Moulded brick cornice below attic storey and parapet with
stone coping. The 3 bay return of No. 68 to Meard Street has 3 blind similarly
dressed windows and quoin pilaster strip to left; stone tablet inscribed "Meards
Street, 1732." Early C19 tassle-head area railings. Exceptionally complete panelled
interiors both to similar plan and including panelled passage entrance with box
cornice, fluted Doric pilastered opening to dog leg stairs with cut carved strings up
to landing above 1st floor, closed strings above and down to basement, with Doric
column balusters and newels; moulded and fielded panelling to 1st floor rooms with
enriched cornices, original marble chimneypieces, panelled closets with angle
