Pair of terrace houses. 1732 by John Meard, much altered with addition of top 2
storeys. Stucco faced but retaining quoin pilasters, concealed roofs. 5 storeys and
basements. No. 69 four windows wide, No. 70 of 3 windows wide. No. 69 has Tuscan
pilastered doorway stuccoed with C19 consoles and cornice in 2nd bay from left.
Semicircular arched doorway in architrave removed to right on No. 70. Sash windows
recessed in stucco architraves, glazing bars intact to 2nd floor. Later top floors
have segmental arched iron framed warehouse windows. Sill bands with consoles below
each window. Bold stuccoed dentil main cornice over 2nd floor broken over quoin
pilasters, parapet with coping. Wrought iron area railings. No. 69 has 4-bay return
to Meard Street, channelled ground floor with pedimented doorway. Similar
fenestration, some blind, sill bands etc; painted stone tablet inscribed "Meards
Street, 1732". Interior of No. 69 completely altered but No. 70 retains good fielded
panel interior, although mutilated in recent years, including fluted Ionic piers
between front and back ground floor rooms, enriched cornices, pilastered passage
hall, dog leg cut and carved string staircase with Doric column balusters and
columnar newels with foliate caps etc.
