Offices, formerly a club. 1863-64 by Charles Octavius Parnell, built as the
Victoria Sporting Club. Stucco with slate roof. Lush Italianate-Baroque corner
treatment with plainer rather coarsely detailed flanks. 3 main storeys raised
on basement and with attic storey. 8 windows wide to Exeter Street, bowed
projecting corner and 3 window return to Wellington Street. Corner entrance
with flight of steps leading up to deeply recessed doorway, the opening
semicircular arched with coupled rusticated columns flanking and the adjoining
bays of each front treated as part of the composition with oculi in tympana of
archivolts over windows flanked by coupled rusticated pilasters. 1st floor
elaborated in similar fashion with Venetian window. Flanks have channelled
arcaded ground floor windows; the upper floors with architraved and keystoned
sashes. Sill band to 1st floor; cornice over 1st floor and pseudo-parapet as
sill course to 2nd floor; main entablature with modillion cornice broken
forward over corner feature; cornice and blocking course to attic storey.
