Pair of terrace houses. c.1718 part of a former row unusual in its uniform design
for this date. The fronts largely rebuilt in stock brick with red brick dressings in
1909 except for original dark red brick southern giant quoin pilaster, rear elevation
and fabric intact. 4 storeys and basements. Each front 3 windows wide. Central
coupled doorways framed by fluted wooden Doric pilasters with entablature, its
architrave and frieze breaking forward with triglyphs over the pilaster, moulded
cornice. The recessed glazing bar sash windows with segmental arches are set in
shallow through storey recesses rising to main cornice with pilaster effect enhanced
by the 1st floor plat band being returned in across ground floor window arches.
Moulded stone cornice over 2nd floor is broken out over quoin pilasters. Attic
storey of No. 6 altered by insertion of full width casemented workshop window.
Parapet with coping. Interiors retain most of their panelled furnishings and
cornices, chimneypieces, pilastered openings, from halls to matching dog leg cut and
carved string stairs with turned balusters and voluted foot to handrail, etc. rear
closet wings etc. No. 6 was the last residence of the essayist William Hazlitt in
1830 (L.C.C. plaque).
