Gentleman's Club. c.1860 by F. Marrable. Portland cement render, slate
roof. Large Italianate palazzo. 3 tall storeys on basement and dormered
mansard. 7 windows wide. Deeply channelled ground floor, with
vermiculated rustication to basement, has enriched architraved semicircular
arched portal, to right of centre, containing the flight of steps up to
lobby doors. Segmental arched basement lights in plinth and tall
architraved ground floor sash windows, 1st floor tall piano nobile windows
with balustrading and segmental pediments. 2nd floor windows set in
festooned frieze with long console brackets to projecting modillion main
cornice. Rusticated and vermiculated quoins, applied pedestal with sill
course to 1st floor. The main cornice is surmounted by balustrade with 4
dies developed as corniced chimney stacks. Rich Italianate mouldings to
interiors with spacious open well top lit staircase with ornate cast iron
balustrade; unique collection of theatrical paintings,due to association,
from the Club's inception, with the theatre.
