25.1.82 Nos. 71 to 87 (odd)
Terrace of "fourth rate" houses with shops. c.1800, associated with
Portman Estate Gloucester Place development; all separate builds. Stock
brick, with stucco channelled ground floors, where not altered by later
shopfronts; concealed slate roofs. 4 storeys. 2-window fronts. Mid C.19
and later C.19 or mid C.20 altered shop fronts; No.71 having unaltered
c.1840-50 bowed shop front flanked by ornamented shop and house door with
projecting lantern cases to fanlights, under entablature-fascia; most of
remaining house doorways between shops semicircular arched and with doors
of 6 fielded or reeded panels. Upper floors have recessed sashes in stucco
reveals, under flat gauged arches. Fronts finished off with parapet with
stone coping. Some cast iron original window guards to 1st floor.
Interiors retain original plain square baluster staircases apart from
No. 85, while No. 77 has reset C.18 wrought iron balustrade; all have one
or more plain marble chimneypieces, some to rear set across corners; half
or fully panelled halls, doors and architrave cases; No. 73 has best
preserved interior with a finely carved chimneypiece ornamented with
artichoke pilasters and fluted frieze with garlanded central medallion.
No. 85 has L.C.C. plaque recording residence of the poet Tom Moore.
