Town mansion. 1919 by W Ernest Lord and Mewes and Davis for first Viscount Furness
(rebuilding delayed by the First World War). Hand made red brick, sparse stone
dressings, slate roof. Neo Georgian facade with 50 ft frontage. Glazing bar sashes,
wrought iron balconies. Garden front symmetrical with full height central bow. Grand
interior almost certainly the contribution of Mewes and Davis: entrance hall lined with
polished stone; staircase with Tijou-style wrought iron balustrade. Ground floor room
(originally the library) with carved oak panelling and built in bookcases. Two large
first floor rooms, one with early Georgian-style pine panelling and one with reset
French boiseries and marble chimneypieces; etc.
