4/21 Building at Arcon
east of Walsuches
Factory building. Late C18. Dressed stone with hipped slate
roof. 2 storeys, west facade of 3 bays north and south
facades approx. 25m long with later extensions to east.
West facade has rusticated ground floor and 1st floor sill
band. 2 ashlar panels flank round-headed window with
imposts and keys, probably originally entrance, now with
small-paned casement. Round-headed windows to 1st floor
with keys and small-paned glazing, the central window blind.
Open timber bell turret with pyramidal roof. North and
south facades of irregular bays with small windows and later
entrances. Walsuches Bleach Works, founded 1775, was one of
the 1st chemical bleach works in the country. A rare and
early example of a bleach works building.
