SOUTH TURTON
STITCH-MI-LANE (south east side)
Harwood Lodge

II
House, now two houses. C17, extended 1756 (dated keystone) and altered mid C19. Brick with stone dressings and base, stone slate roof.

Two storeys, seven bays, the first bay is higher, the second bay is canted, fifth bay is projecting two-storey gabled porch; the first, second and seventh bays are later extensions. First two bays have cornice and balustrades; quoins. Third to seventh bays have single-chamfered-mullioned windows with label moulds, the ground floor windows mostly of three lights, but the fourth bay has five-light window and sixth bay has French window. The first floor has two-light windows in gabled half-dormers with plain bargeboards; the porch has three-light window with sundial above. All except the porch window are probably C19. The first two bays have windows with gauged brick flat arches, those to ground floor with keys, the key to central window of canted bay inscribed: "L/R E/1756" (not in original place). Most of these windows are sashed, those to first floor with glazing bars. Left return has rusticated stone porch with elliptical-arched opening and pedimented doorcase and fanlight with glazing bars. To left a two storey bowed bay with balustrade. Three cross-axial stacks with diagonal shafts.

The home of first Lord Leverhulme's parents, 1873-93, it is said that plans and experiments for Sunlight soap manufacture took place here.
