l862, by Bowman. Consists mainly of an octagonal tower in red brick with pointed
copper cap. Ashlar rusticated quoins and cornice. Narrow lights in stone
rusticated openings. Top has lantern of small lancet lights. Arched doorway now
blocked. Later C19 work to rear. Road elevation of main block has windows
of 2 lancet lights and rounded in ashlar, most now blocked. Stone-coped plinth.
Curtilage includes battered wall of red brick with corner turrets and arrow
slit lights. Opened at a bazaar attended by Mr & Mrs Gladstone, April 22nd
l862. "The assemblv was of the most recherche description and comprised the
elite and the bon ton of the Borough and its suburbs." (Stockport Advertiser).

The Armoury of the Cheshire Regiment forms a visual group with Nos 39 to 53 (odd)
and No 30, which are of local interest.
